20 in 20: Restaurant Rundown – Flo’s Hot Dogs

I bet you looked at the title and said, “Seriously Jaime?  Hot dogs?”  And I say, “YES!  Hot dogs!”  And not just any hot dogs… FLO’S Hot Dogs!  If you’ve never been, this is a road trip to take!

Our father has always wanted to open his own hot dog stand, and has been talking about it for years.  I thought that for Father’s Day, back about four years ago, Eric and I could surprise him with a road trip up to Cape Neddick Maine and visit the epitome of hot dog stands, and see just how successful the restaurant is.

We showed up to this seemingly unassuming, side-of-the-road stand and my dad looked at me questioningly.  I told him that we were there to see just how dogs are done.  He still seemed a bit hesitant, but waited in line with us before Flo opened her doors.

If you don’t know the story behind this hot dog shack, it started with a woman, Florence Stacy, who owned and ran the business for many years.  In that time, she created a relish whose recipe, to this day, is held secret.  And it’s probably a good thing, because it’s for the relish that people flock to this New England gem.

Relish, like the green pickle stuff?  Nope, not at all like the pickle stuff.  Like this other stuff, that is sweet, and brown, and so much yummier than I’m making it sound!  But it’s rare to get out of Flo’s without loading the relish on your hot dog!  The other secret, besides the relish, is that once the hot dogs run out, business is closed!  So it’s not unusual to order 2, 3, or 11 hot dogs at a time.  When I told my dad this, he didn’t believe me, but the few people in front of us ordered 4 and 6, and one guy ordered 11, so he got the hint.  We order when we get to the counter, or we don’t get the goods!

CIMG6417Since it was all of our first time at Flo’s, we all ordered 2 hot dogs with the relish, and oh boy was it good!  We relished in the relish, and figuring out what was in the topping was futile.  Bite after bite was processed meat heaven, and we kept eating until our plated were licked clean.  Mmmm….

It was a great Father’s Day, and I loved getting to surprise him with this local hideaway.  Thanks Flo!
